About John Mark Sowden

John was born in Colome, S. D., in 1920 with wanderlust in his blood and John Mark Sowden 1920 - 1990adventure in his heart. He grew up in California, saw action in the Navy in the South Pacific, worked for RCA on the early warning radar system, married a beautiful Christian Dior model, bought a 24-foot sailboat when he was 46, and then made history with his three solo circumnavigations. The Guinness Book of Records lists him as the earliest solo sailor to circumnavigate the globe three times in the same boat. It is an amazing feat.

About The Author

The book was written by his sister, Joan Sowden Deily, who kept a promise to her brother who died in 1990. It took her 16 years to compile John’s logs, tapes and letters. She also gathered photographs from around the world and fabulous documents from
exotic ports. The result is a fine book suitable for the best collections.

Joan Sowden Deily earned her bachelor’s degree
in business administration from Eastern Oregon State College, enjoyed a successful career as an executive with a major telephone company, and then began compiling the extensive works of her sea-loving brother. Over the years, Joan has followed in her brother’s footsteps, exhibiting a
bit of his wanderlust by visiting many of the
islands and exotic locations mentioned in this book. Joan lives with her husband of nearly 50 years on the shores of beautiful Flathead Lake, near Kalispell, MT.

Quotable Quotes

D. H. “Nobby” Clarke, consultant to the Guinness Book of Records: “One hundred and fourteen single-handers have completed voyages around the world; only John Sowden and his little TARMIN did it three gloriously successful times!”

By Herb Smith, author of Sailing Three Oceans: “We used pictures and text about John Sowden in our book. I sure respect your brother!”

Ted Jones, Commodore, JSSI, of The Joshua Slocum Society International:
“John Sowden was a courageous sailor and makes for exciting reading.”

John Sowden spent 20 years on his three circumnavigations. We feel this quote says it all:

"Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the
things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do.
So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor.
Catch the tradewinds in your sails.
Explore. Dream. Discover."
